New Panasonic compacts include TZ5 superzoom with HD

New Panasonic compacts include TZ5 superzoom with HD
Today Panasonic unveiled a raft of new compacts including the successor to the Lumix TZ3, one of our favourite compacts of last year. The new TZ5 features the same excellent 28-280mm stabilised zoom lens in a compact case, but upgrades both the sensor and 3in screen resolutions to 9.1 Megapixels and 460k pixels respectively. The big new feature is HD movie recording at 720p / 30fps, and HDTV connectivity with an optional component cable; this also featured on the new Lumix FX55 slim compact. The TZ5 rounds this off with an improved Intelligent Auto mode. For full details of all the new models, check our Panasonic compact camera page.

Samsung HT-X710T
Samsung HT-X710T

With the HT-X710T, Samsung attempts to pile a DVD/CD player, FM radio, iPod dock, USB reader, Bluetooth and other goodies into one shiny wonder box, but ends up faltering a bit under the load of so many tasks. While it technically performs everything on the bullet list, we were less than blown away by its sloppy interface, lack of expandability, and the impracticality of its slick-looking new design.

GTbyCITROEN brings Gran Turismo 5 to life

GTbyCITROEN brings Gran Turismo 5 to life
It may be destined for the game console rather than the garage, but the GTbyCITROËN concept is still one of the most outlandish examples of automotive design to emerge from the 2008 Paris Motor Show where it's making its global debut. The car is the result of a collaboration between Citroën and the creators of Gran Turismo and will appear in its virtual form in the 5th installment of the popular Playstation game. The imposing real world version stands at five meters long and features a wrap around windscreen, gullwing doors, huge air intakes and an over-sized, mobile rear spoiler. Not surprisingly for a car inspired by a computer game, tech specifications for the GTbyCITROËN are a little light on, although within the game it will do its bit for the promotion of greener motoring with a fuel cell powered electric drive train that's totally emissions free (apart from the electricity running the console of course)...

AVA Direct Gaming PC Workstation

AVA Direct Gaming PC Workstation

AVA Direct builds custom gaming systems to order, and our review sample turned out to be the computer equivalent of a 22-ounce filet mignon paired with a $500 bottle of merlot. Not surprisingly, the $6,200 amalgamation of high-end hardware blew nearly every game we could throw at it out of the water, with build quality and attention to detail from this manufacturer to match. This specific system build doubles as both a workstation and a gaming PC which explains why Xeon processors were used.

Beam me up Allan! Holographic projection from TelstraClear

http://www.stuff.co.nz/4695048a28.html

Yesterday, I was lucky enough to be at this event in the Vector Arena, where TelstraClear took the opportunity to outline plans, recall success and show off some truly impressive technology.

Actually I was on one of the stands talking about IP Gateway and Next IP Laughing

I was also fortunate enough to see the preparations first-hand yesterday morning (I arrived early with the Events Managers, so got a back-stage tour), and spoke to some of the folks that put the show together. Really cool stuff, and a real chest-thumping show.

The hologram of Rove was beamed in live across the Trans-tasman link, and there was very little delay - Rove commented that the delay was doing wonders for comic timing. He showed a picture of that mornings Sydney Morning Herald, although the sport section had fallen out of it.... maybe into a large rugby cup....

So a first for TCL, but also a real-revving of the engines at the core of the company....

NB: I work at TelstraClear

Canon EF 24-105mm for cropped-frame DSLRs - full review and video tour

The EF 24-105mm is a premium quality zoom from Canon's 'L' series. It features superb build and mechanical quality, quick and quiet USM focusing and Image Stabilisation to counteract camera shake. It's an ideal general purpose lens for owners of full-frame Canon DSLRs, but what about those with cropped-frame bodies like the EOS 400D / XTi, EOS 450D / XSi or EOS 40D? In this review we'll examine how the EF 24-105mm performs on cropped-frame Canon DSLRs and as always, check out our video tour for a demonstration. Read More

Sites to Browse - Shopping - Garbage as Sculpture
Want to take home a piece of New York City? How about picking up some authentic garbage?

One of the more unique travel collectibles you may ever see, NYC Garbage offers just that - garbage from New York City.

But this garbage is not just a mishmash of plastic bags and coffee cups; each selection of garbage is arranged by artist Justin Gignac and placed inside a signed, numbered, and dated cube. And, according to the author, each box "is unique and won't leak or smell", so there's little chance of the smell of reeking Reuben sandwiches entering your home....

New laptop - Compaq Presario V3500

New laptop - Compaq Presario V3500
19 July 2008, Harvey Norman had a huge sale on, I cant remember exactly what it was called but it had '12 hour marathon' in the name. Anyway, I ended up buying a new laptop! Compaq Presario V3500 with Windows Vista Home Premium, I don't care what anyone has to say about Compaq I absolutely love this laptop. Considering my previous laptop was a Dell Inspiron 2200 anything reasonably up-to-date would have been sufficient.. One or two more usb ports would have been nice and maybe even bluetooth connectivity but apart from that it does everything I need and does it well. I especially like the button above the touchpad which enables me to lock it.

If anyone is looking for a really nice laptop under $1300 I would recommend the Presario V3500.
